The Ohio Federation of Music Clubs (OFMC) has awarded its 2011 College and University Dance Award to The University of ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ.
In particular, the OFMC praised the ongoing collaborations between ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ's Dance Program and School of Music. All ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ dance classes are accompanied by percussionists or pianists, and ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ performances frequently combine live music and dance.
In announcing the $1,200 award, OFMC Dance Chairman Vickie Nign commended the ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ Dance Company's fall 2010 performances of "Rushes," featuring ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ percussion students, directed by ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ Professor Larry Snider, and ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ dance students, and "Piano Pieces," featuring ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ faculty pianist Michele Mills and dance students. The collaboration was further strengthened by "Rushes" composer Bruno Louchouarn, who traveled to ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ from his home in Los Angeles to work closely with the music and dance students.
“We are in awe over the excellence of your "Rushes" and "Piano Pieces," Nign stated. "The concert was a tribute to so much wonderful artistic and genius talent."
ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ Dance Company Director Cydney Spohn explains that combining dance and live music is a skill acquired only through practice.
"Dancers and musicians at The University of ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ are enthusiastic collaborators, which adds value to both of our programs and greatly expands the education, performance and career opportunities for our students," notes Spohn.
